Day 2: Tuesday, May 11th

 10:30 am

I enjoyed a nice sleep-in this morning since Voices of Color doesn't meet on Tuesdays. My goal for today is to find a book to replace "Beloved". Although Shauna and I both agreed it would be a great choice, we decided we should have a more diverse ethnicity of authors, considering the name of the course. I am going to research authors from around the world who mainly focus on fiction/realistic-fiction to keep students interested and engaged.

11:30 pm

My research so far has been pretty successful. I thought that it was going to take a lot longer to find a new book/author and come up with essay and project topics but it only took me the first hour to do all of this. My new choice is "The Best We Could Do" by Thi Bui. Her graphic novel is a memoir of her parents escaping Vietnam during the war and becoming refugees in the United States. I am going to now dive more into depth about the parameters of the paper topics, and then dive deeper into the project outlines.

12:30 pm

I encountered a little bit of writer's block, so I am still in the process of coming up with an in-depth description of paper topics. I'm hoping that by the end of the day I will have finished both descriptions for the papers and started on the guidelines for the projects. Both of the projects for each book have some sort of art incorporated into it, and my hope is that this will make it more enjoyable for students.

1:30 pm

Within the last hour, I have come up with paper guidelines for each of the novels. For the rest of the day, I will be doing the same process only for the projects, too. I am hoping that art-based projects will be fun in every sense, including creating, presenting, and observing their peers as they present theirs. If I have time before the end of Project Period, I might be able to provide an example of each project to put into the topics page when the time comes.

2:30 pm

I just wrapped up my second day of Senior Project. I put in four hours today, which adds up to 8 total since I've started. I didn't get as much done as I wanted to today, but I still feel pretty comfortable with where I am right now. I finished the rules and guidelines for both the paper topics and the projects, and tomorrow I am going to see if I can get my hands on a copy of these books. Since this is a literature class, I needed to incorporate at least some writing. One project entails a piece of art and an artist statement, and the other is a graphic novel that must include at least 5 drawings, and three paragraphs of writing for each drawing. Today was okay overall, I hope to get more done tomorrow. See you then!

  1. Hailey, I'm loving all the new ideas you're bringing to the table. I forgot to give you your copy of the print out of Site of Memory, so I'll put it in your mailbox! I'm so looking forward to digging more into this work with you!
